This useful scan and reset tool has been talked about in other threads, but I wanted to start a dedicated thread for the unit and it's codes here.

I ordered the R5/FCX-3-U (http://www.peakeresearch.com/fcx3.htm) unit that gives you the flexibility of plugging into the slot plug under the steering column or the round plug right by the wiper washer filler under the hood.

There is a very good knowledge base on these units over on the M5 board here (http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-discussion/99962-knowledge-base-peake-codes-e39-m5.html).

This table is borrowed from them, it shows all the codes as they apply to the M5, which should be identical to our car with some obvious ommisions like the diff lock warning!

One of the fairly common errors with reading the codes are the alpha characters, which can look like numbers. For example the letter "b" lower case, looks like a number "6" until you realize that the number "6" in the LCD display has the top horizontal line lit up.

Letter b:
|_
|_|

Number 6:
._
|_
|_|
