Just got back from having new tires installed on the car. I went with the new Michelin Pilot Super Sport. I read a lot of great reviews online and decided to give them a try instead of getting another set of Michelin PS2's (my original tire).

The grip is crazy good... much better than the PS2's. In addition they are very quiet and very smooth. Anyone considering replacing their PS2's should seriously consider the Pilot Super Sports.

My tire dealer tells me that the PS2 will soon be discontinued (the PS2 has been around for 10 years) and that the Pilot Super Sport will be its replacement.

Sweet- where did you get them- I thought they werent out in too many sizes.

I ordered them from a local tire dealer (Deerfield Tire) about a month ago. They told me they would come in early to mid-April and they were spot on with the delivery date. Tirerack also has them in stock now in most of the 19" and 20" sizes.

My car is an Alpina, so the original tires and the new ones are:

255-35-20 front
285-30-20 rear

If they have these sizes I'd recommend them as they fill out the wheels at the rear a bit better.

Front: 255/35/20 ZR-XL97Y
Rear: 295/30/20 ZR-XL101Y

I forgot to write that the new tires are my first set of replacement tires for the car (2003 Alpina). I just turned 12,000 miles and the original PS2's actually had quite a bit of thread left but as the tires were 9 years old, I felt it was time to replace them. When the old rear tires were removed they literally fell apart at the sidewall... I'm assuming from dry rot.

I'm not sure my experience was typical but I know there are some low mileage cars here so be sure to check out your tires if they have a lot of age. I probably should have replaced the tires sooner but I kept hearing about a PS2 replacement so I waited longer than I should have.

I think 4-5 years is about the longest you can expect regular road performance rubber to last, but for real supersport/trackday applications I know that you have just about 18 months from time of manufacture before the rubbers start to harden, and the performance starts to deteriorate. Ten or even fifteen years should be fine for a non-performane/touring tire on a collector car, but they all harden and deteriorate over time.

I would change those tires every 3 years if you haven't worn the tread down- its just a good safety practice.

I think the true answer is it depends. These are high performance tires- usually high performance items mean they aren't as durable to heat cycles etc. My rule of thumb is 3 years but if it slips to 4 or 5 its no biggie.

Very nice. I haven't checked on my sizes, but I'm due in another year probably. What are these running on price. Same as the PS2 or more?

Hi Guys, i have to replace my tires as well and have read your comments about the new Super Sport tires from Michelin. That looked for me the most logical choice, i have the 18 inch original wheels on my 2001 Z8.

F 245/45/18 is availabe with item # 91157
R 275/40/18 looks like it does not exist in that identical size?

what should i take then as a size for the rear tyre? A 265/40ZR18??

Further BMW SF askes for 2 rear tyres 1280 usd thats a lot more then Tyrerack.com....

I would investigate a set of MPS2- they were made in the OEM sizes.

The tire rack will ship wherever you want, but there will still be charges for mounting, balancing etc. Get an estimate if you have the tires delivered.

I know this will be repetition but I would stick with the PS2 unless you can get the exact size you want.

I have the same question as jwgerritsen, my wheels are 18 in and the MPSS have F245/45 but the Rear tires don't come in 275/40:3gears:. Does that mean MPSS are out for the OEM wheels or do I get F245/40 8-9.5 width and R275/35 width range 9-11". Just wandering if that would fit well or as Z8Mania suggests stay with MPS2. Those two sizes are the closest to OEM front and rear that I see being made.

I've been reading on other forums that since the Pilot Super Sport is new it may not be available in all sizes. You might want to contact your local tire dealer or Michelin to check if the size you need is going to be released soon.

However, if you need tires now you're probably better off getting PS2's.

What's a shocker, and it may be due to dwindling supplies, but the PSS is about 25% or more than the PS2.

I think its either summer 2007 or summer 2008.

Less for the PSS. I was just looking around the web. $300 vs $400 - obvious variations for size.

I just ordered a set of the new Pilot Super Sports for my incoming Alpina. My cost is $365 each for the front and $410 each for the rear.

Can't wait to hear about them. I got my Pirellis last summer, just before the NW Volcano Tour... they are already looking sad on the outside shoulders. I'll have to check my paper work, but I don't think I have much more than 5,000 mi on them! (if that). Looking forward to the PSS.

I used to get 5k out of the cup tires on the GT3. I don't understand how these "Normal tires" can wear so fast.

The car has been back b/c the new headlamp is leaking water, its one week old but maybe much older sitting on the shelf, and I am getting the only other one in the US, anyway....I need non run flats ans asked them to get me PS2 or new Mich Super sport. They found me 3 but not 4 for the Ps2(disc. I guess) and no super sports; are you all finding this to be true?

Any Pirelli or Conti fans,ran P zero on my Masersati with no complaints, thnx! dog

The Bridgestone RE-11 is probably the tire of choice for OE sizes right now.

Dana put a set of PS2s on a car with OE wheels last week. So, they're still out there if you know where to look, or your guy could have found the last three. The Super Sport is not available in OE sizes, and thus, you won't find them.

I have 19 x 9" in front and 19 x 10" in the rear HRE's I have been running Yokohamas that are not longer available (Size) 265 and 295. I highlighted the sizes I have been waiting for in these new Michelins. :thumbsup:

I am going up in profile to the 40/45 series as they both have 114mm sidewalls. :driving:

After years of rubberband profile tires on several different cars, I want more sidewall to take up the roughness on the roads. For track use only, I would stick with the super low profiles tires. I also like the look of a bit more meat on the wheel. :rolleyes:

I'm on 255/40 and 285/35. I'll probably need to get a set next year. I need to do the math and see what it'd be like to go up 5%.

285/35 has a 99.75mm sidewall. On a 19" that is (2 x 99.75/25.4)+19=26.85" tall
255/40 has a 102mm sidewall. On a 19" wheel is (2 x 102/25.4)+19= 27.03" tall

255/45 has a 114.75 sidewall. On a 19" wheel is (same math) 28.03" tall
285/40 has a 114mm sidewall. On a 19 that is.......................27.97" tall :rolleyes:

As I never get the car anywhere near the limits of the tires, I may need to look at the new Bridgestones or Contis next year. I really prefer the Michelins, but this new model will take some time to catch up.

That's part of the reason I chose the wheels I have. Besides the tasteful design, being used in greater numbers on the M5 "should" translate to better availability of new tires, etc over time. Not so with our favorite Michelins, yet.

Tirerack shows to have PS2 still, but they're nearly $2k for the set now. I'd order them just to have them saved, but I'm starting to worry how old the lots are since they've been out of production for a while, especially if I'm at least six months from making a change.

My reasoning is with newer lightweight tires like these, the penalty for a bit more (1/2" above rim) sidewall is minimized. The upside is a more compliant ride and better absorption of poor road conditions (ie protection).

I am not racing so what tiny amount of diminished acceleration will not be noticeable.

In the not too distant past, the tire weight was a holdback.

Personally, I have grown tired of the ultra low profile tires for street use. But that is just my personal issue. :rolleyes: :driving:

I agree. I don't think clearance will be an issue and they should fill up the wheel weels a bit better. Take pictures when you're done.
